Damage to Relativistic Interstellar Spacecraft by ISM Impact Gas Accumulation

چکیده
As part of the NASA Starlight collaboration, we look at implications impacts with interstellar medium (ISM) on a directed energy-driven relativistic spacecraft. The spacecraft experiences stream MeV/nucleon along forward edge primarily from hydrogen and helium nuclei. accumulation implanted slowly diffusing gas atoms in solids drives damage through meso-scale processes bubble formation, blistering, exfoliation. This results macroscopic changes to material properties and, cases blistering exfoliation, erosion via blister rupture delamination. Relativistic constant velocity will stop similar depth, as predicted by Bethe–Bloch stopping subsequent simulations implantation distribution, leading mixed system that observed within fusion plasma-facing components. However, difference depth near-surface respect direction exposure means previously developed empirical models cannot be used predict formation or onset. In this work, present model local concentration threshold for ISM speeds. Expected effects mitigation strategies are also discussed. same considerations apply Breakthrough Starshot mission.

Identification of Gas Accumulation Adjacent to the Gas Hydrate Bearing Zone by Inversion Utilizing AVO Attribute
The presence of gas hydrate and associated gas in the Makran Accretionary Prism, offshore Iran, has been confirmed by various seismic indicators, including the bottom-simulating reflector (BSR), amplitude blanking, and bright spot. The pre-stack analysis and the study of amplitude-variation-with-offset (AVO) attributes are the most reliable tools for semi-quantitative study of gas hydrate and f...
متن کاملInterstellar dust. Evidence for interstellar origin of seven dust particles collected by the Stardust spacecraft.
Seven particles captured by the Stardust Interstellar Dust Collector and returned to Earth for laboratory analysis have features consistent with an origin in the contemporary interstellar dust stream. More than 50 spacecraft debris particles were also identified. The interstellar dust candidates are readily distinguished from debris impacts on the basis of elemental composition and/or impact tr...
متن کاملHigh excitation ISM and gas
An overview is given of ISO results on regions of high excitation ISM and gas, i.e. H ii regions, the Galactic Centre and Supernovae Remnants. IR emission due to fine-structure lines, molecular hydrogen, silicates, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and dust are summarised, their diagnostic capabilities illustrated and their implications highlighted.
متن کاملDirect Contact among Galactic Civilizations by Relativistic Interstellar Spaceflight*
An estimate of the number of advanced technical civilizations on planets of other stars depends on our knowledge of the rate of star formation; the frequency of favorably situated planets; the probabilities of the origins of life, of intelligence and of technical civilization ; and the iifetimes of technicai civilizations. These parameters are poorly known. The estimates of the present paper le...
متن کاملRadiation Hazard of Relativistic Interstellar Flight
From the point of view of radiation safety, interstellar space is not empty. Neutral and ionized interstellar gas and cosmic rays consisting of H and He-nucleons constitute radiation hazard aboard relativistic interstellar ships. Relativistic aberration of cosmic rays is evaluated and radiation doses from oncoming relativistic flow of interstellar gas and cosmic rays are estimated. Necessary sh...
